50 to go…week 2–Story 2: a fable

In writing on June 12, 2011 at 10:42 am

It’s Sunday, which means 52 Stories, a really wonderful blog on Tumblr, is publishing my second of 52 short-short stories for the year.  Last week, I mentioned this, but as a dare to myself, I have joined this group of writers and artists on 52 Stories to see if I can come up with one flash-fiction piece every week.  The stories have to be short–under a thousand words–which is both easier and harder than what I normally do.  Knowing where my fiction is heading, the stories will probably be fables or magical in nature, unlike last week’s Donuts story, which is older, but which I hope you might check out as long as you’re at it.

OK, my peeps.  Happy Sunday and good reading!

an older story in a new home…Week 1, Story 1

I mentioned last week that I joined a group of writers who have committed themselves to writing one short-short every week.  The blog is called 52 Stories and it is on Tumblr.  There are other pubs with that title, so below I’ve included a link..

Though I love short stories as a form, the compression required by flash fiction is working me.  It’s just hard to write a story in less than 1000 words.  At least it is for me.  But that’s neither here nor there.  Here’s the link to the first story.  51 more to go!

time to vote…

to vote on what my story collection should be called

OK, my peeps.  I have my first story collection done, and I am in the middle  of researching potential agents/indie presses, but here’s the dilemma: my working title is Real Magic Doesn’t Sell.  Even though that is the title of one of my favorite stories in the book, there are a couple problems–one being that “doesn’t sell” coupled with the term, “real magic,” which is kind of my theme, may not be appetizing.  So, here’s another option: Supplemental Instructions. Let’s have a vote.  Winning side will get prizes of some sort.

Why short stories matter…

I recently took part in a back and forth about the importance of the short story on the Ploughshares blog. Greg Schutz, the writer of the post that I responded to was kind enough to allow me my two cents. Though with inflation, two cents ain’t what it used to be.

Here’s the link:
