Uruguay…I knew you would…

In Uncategorized on July 3, 2010 at 12:07 am

I work in a predominantly Latino neighborhood, and I can’t tell you how many times these past couple weeks I have had to make a case for my parents’ homeland. Mexico, they said (though most people knew that wasn’t going to happen.) Then it was all Brazil (lots of Mexicans and Central Americans) seem to love Brazil almost as much as their own countries’ teams. People in the know. People who love the sport–they talk about Brazil-this, Brazil that. Look at today’s (July 2) post on Jose de Jesus Ortiz’ blog, Soccer y Futbol. He talks about Brazil being upset, but is there even a line about Uruguay’s amazing victory? No, there is no mention.

Listen, I like Brazil, though I would take Argentina over them any day. But now, come on people, let’s concede the point. Uruguay–it’s pretty poor. It has more cows than people, but hell, they know how to kick a ball around.

So give us some love.

Uruguay–First Time in 20 years…

Don’t mean to brag, but Uruguay is the first through. Here are some highlights for those of you who missed it this morning:

That said, because part of my family is Argentinian and a part is Mexican, I’ll also be looking forward to that match. Still, Uruguay, is the underdog, and we should root for it.

Uruguay, why don’t people love you the way you deserve?

I was surfing around looking for some scores on today’s Uruguay-South Korea match and I was struck by one consistency: almost every comment I read on every blog said that Korea should win. I understand the Asian bloggers and maybe I get the US fans, like this one at a blog I just discovered: To Be An Electric Telegraph But you Latin Americans, what the f$%k? I read Brazilians, Mexicans, Guatemalans, etc. rooting for South Korea. Why?

Don’t get me wrong? I don’t have a problem with Korea, and yes, I do have family from Uruguay, but even if I didn’t, I still think it makes no sense that Latinos are not united on this one. Uruguay is a tiny country. It is completely an underdog, here. And yet…there’s no love.

Well, I love you, Uruguay and though I very much love kim-chi, today, it’s about empanadas.

Something Lighter–Like Uruguay Going On in South Africa…

After last night’s blog, I thought something a litle lighter in tone would be appropriate. So here’s a link to some highlights from the Mexico Uruguay match. Enjoy!!

I also really appreciated this post from a non-fan:

Uruguay…you’re doing alright…

I thought this would a good follow-up to the last post. A little break from heady Latin American stuff to some really heady soccer–see the last minute defense by Uruguay.
